Equipment

  • 1 saucepan
  • 1 large frying pan
  • 1 mixing bowl
  • paper towels

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound pork ground
  • 8 canned water chestnuts, finely diced
  • 1/4 cup green onions finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon soya sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger grated
  • 1 packet wonton skins
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients (except wonton skins and oil) to make a fine mixture. Mix well to ensure that all the ingredients are spread properly.
  • Heat the oil on a medium heat in a saucepan. You can also use a deep fryer.
  • Take a wonton skin, and lay it flat on a surface.
  • At its center, place 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 teaspoon of the mixture.
  • Fold the wonton skin into half, covering the mixture.
  • Seal the wontons by slightly pressing down to fasten the dough around the pork mixture, leaving the edges unsealed.
  • Fry the wontons in small batches. Add the oil to a wok or large or a large frying pan and warm over medium-high heat. The oil should reach 350°F/177°C on an instant reading thermometer before cooking the wontons.
  • Fry the wontons for around 2-3 minutes, until golden brown. Remove with slotted spoon and place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • Serve hot or cold with a sweet and sour sauce.

Notes

The filling is the heart and soul of any wonton, and it's crucial to create a well-balanced mixture that bursts with flavor. Start with a combination of ground pork or chicken, finely chopped shrimp, and a medley of aromatic ingredients. Enhance the flavors by adding minced garlic, grated ginger, and a touch of soy sauce for that savory goodness. For an extra kick, incorporate a pinch of white pepper or a dash of sesame oil. Remember, the key is to finely chop the ingredients to ensure they blend seamlessly together and create a delightful filling that will make your wontons shine!
