Red Star Restaurant 红星酒家 - Dim Sum Restaurant in Central Region

Best review about Singapore Red Star Restaurant

Looking to preserve and replicate the unique Dim Sum dining experience that is only available in Hong Kong, “Red Star Restaurant (红星酒家)” has stuck to the traditional way of serving food to their customers in push carts.

Founded in the 1970s through a joint venture between four top Singapore chefs, the present “Red Star Restaurant (红星酒家)” has seen many changes, and yet remains a hit amongst the locals

Located at the 7th floor of Blk 54 Chin Swee Road, this restaurant is the only sole unit to have occupied the entire block. “Red Star Restaurant (红星酒家)” operates via 2 main working shifts: 7am-3pm is mainly for Dim-Sum dining, and from 6pm-10.30pm it would function as a normal Chinese Restaurant.

Red Star Restaurant 红星酒家 - Dim Sum Restaurant in Central Region

I visited this restaurant on a Sunday at 8.30am, and despite what I thought was already early, most tables were already occupied by the time I arrived. There was even a queue to greet me as I stepped into the restaurant!

The restaurant’s dining room is very spacious, almost the size of a football field. And right away you can see their waitresses going around with push carts to bring food to the customers.

The method of placing your orders in this restaurant is very different as well. Instead of placing of orders through a single waiter/waitress, here you have to grab the attention of the push cart personnel. If you are lucky, you might get the push cart that has what you want right away.

More often than not, I find myself waiting for the right push cart to come by. That in itself was a really new experience for me!

The restaurant offers many, if not all, of the signature Dim Sum dishes.

I went with the salted-egg custard buns, Siew-Mai (Pork Dumplings), Steamed pork ribs, Char-siew buns (BBQ Pork Buns) and Lo Mai Kai (Steamed glutinous rice with chicken) for my first few dishes.

The “salted-egg custard buns” were spongy on the outside, and when eaten, the hot salted-egg paste on the inside immediately melted my taste buds.

It felt like a volcanic eruption of lava flowing out whenever you take a bite. I had expected the salted-egg paste to be salty, but I did not taste any of that.

Rather, it was more of a sweet one, and with a blend of fresh eggy smell!

The “Siew-Mai (Pork Dumplings)” & “Steamed pork ribs” were firm in texture and with every bite, I could taste the freshness of the pork ingredient being used. What I felt is a definite must-try dish when you visit this restaurant is their “Char-siew buns” (BBQ Pork Buns).

Unlike most versions of it where the buns are round, theirs had a “flower-shaped” dome opening at the top. The buns were soft to the touch, and the Char-siew on the inside was very moist and flavouful.

The “Lo Mai Kai” (Steamed glutinous rice with chicken) at this restaurant was very different as well.

The rice is accompanied by a whole Chinese mushroom & a generous amount of sausage. The rice was sticky in texture, and tasted heavenly!

I felt that the overall taste of this dish was very well-balanced, making it a must try when you dine in at this place!

All-in-all, the overall food quality was indeed satisfying, albeit a little pricey. The environment on the other hand was very relaxing, and I had a pleasant dining experience.

It is nice to see that the restaurant has not done away with the push cart way of serving their delicacies.

If you are looking for some higher quality Dim Sum & a pleasant dining environment, then “Red Star Restaurant (红星酒家)” is definitely the place that you will want to be at!
